Papers of Betty Jean Furgerson, 1944-1995 (bulk 1993-1995).

Correspondence, newspaper clippings, music and theater programs, printed materials, and photographs documenting Furgerson's personal and professional careers. The papers reflect her interests in the arts and civic participation in Waterloo, especially her long friendship and association with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, whose members she and her family housed when they were on tour in the Waterloo area. Included also are records of her course work at Talladega College, Ala. (1950), at Iowa State Teachers College (1952-1954), and especially at the University of Kansas School of Social Work (1970-1973). Her professional work experience is reflected in papers detailing herwork as district advisor to the Conestoga Council of Girl Scouts in Waterloo, to her involvement in parent education for the Black Hawk County Head Start program, and chiefly to her directorship of the Waterloo Human Rights Commission (1974-1992). Furgerson also served as president of the Iowa Public Television Broadcasting Board and the papers document this role. Of particular interest are the records pertaining to funding for public television, the construction of the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), and the 461 Task Force study on converting the ICN to a public utility. The largest single group of papers documents Furgerson's service with the Iowa State Board of Regents (1989-1995). Its administrative records contain minutes of meetings which reflect the board's role as trustee of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and material related to the search for two university presidents. This group of papers also contains topical files on subjects of particular interest to Furgerson, notably the recruitment and retention of minority students and faculty and cultural diversity at the regents' institutions.
